"TOWN" BEAT "UNITED"

Heavy Scoring in Friendly Match at Selby.

ASSOCIATION - FRIENDLY MATCH.)

Huddersfield Town: Turner; Hayes, Mountford; Carr, Young, Dodgin; Bott, Hine, Bungay, McLean, Luke.

Leeds United: Potts; Menzies, Milburn (J.); Edwards, Hornby, Copping; Duggan, Hydes, Keetley, Furness, Cochrane.

Leeds United and Huddersfield Town formed the attraction for Martinmas Monday at Selby, this afternoon. Potts won the toss for United, and Bungay kicked off for Town before a good crowd. Bott was soon prominent for Town, and he got in a centre which found his inside colleagues at fault with the opposing defence spreadeagled. The next attack saw Bungay gather from a throw-in on the left, and left with a clear field the Town centre-forward had no difficulty in beating Potts. Continuing to press, Town again brought Potts into action, the United goalkeeper gathering a dangerous shot with a couple of opponents closing in on him. Play continued in the Leeds territory, and Milburn headed out a header from Hine under the bar. The first time Leeds became dangerous, Turner saved a strong shot from Hydes at close range. Furness received the ball in the subsequent melee, but a weak shot by the Leeds inside-left ended the pressure. At the other end the ever-watchful Bungay again centred, Potts saving at the second attempt. Duggan next came into the picture, taking the ball close in before shooting, only to find Turner safe. The Hine-Bott wing again got going, the result being a shot from Luke, which Potts covered. Edwards next sought to put Hydes through, but the United inside-right found Mountford his master. A pretty touch by Hine provided Bott with an opening, but the winger shot over from close range. Receiving from Copping, Furness sent out to Duggan only to see the outside-right centre into the hands of Turner. McLean put the Town further ahead after twenty-six minutes following smart work from Hine and Bott. The nearest approach to a United score was when Cochrane sent against the woodwork. An Edwards-Duggan effort should have proved fruitful to the Elland Road men, but Hydes missed the winger's centre. Town, however, were in luck when Furness hit the woodwork, and when Mountford cleared on the line with Turner beaten. Near the interval, however, had the reward from some good work on the right. Duggan went away and the ball eventually reached Keetley, who found the net with a header.

OLD RIVALS AT GRIPS

Town Beat United in "Friendly" Match

Huddersfield Town won by six goals to three in their match with Leeds United which formed the Martinmas Monday attraction on the Selby Town ground yesterday. The immediate concern of the Elland Road club, however, centres around a leg injury which their Irish international right winger sustained two minutes from the close. Duggan was making headway for the Town goal, when the slippery going caused him to pull up short, and later it was found that he had pulled a muscle. It is to be hoped that the injury will yield to treatment, and that United will be able next Saturday to field the eleven which has done so well for them of late. Regarding the play, the spectators were treated to a spectacular exhibition of football. For the winners McLean and Hine showed some pretty touches, and Bungay, Bott and Luke were not slow to respond to many chances that came their way. Young played his customary clever game, both in attack and defence. Further behind, Hayes was given the opportunity of showing what a good capture Town have got in this young South Yorkshire player, for he made a good partner for Mountford. With play for the most part in United's territory, their defence had a busy time, with Milburn playing a sound game, and Copping the pick of the half backs. Duggan and Hydes made a good right wing, and Furness showed brilliant individual touches, particularly when he scored with a back-heel shot. Bott (2) McLean (2) Bungay and Hine scored for the winners and Keetley, Cochrane and Furness for United.

Teams:- Huddersfield Town: Turner; Hayes, Mountford; Carr, Young, Dodgin; Bott, Hine, Bungay, McLean, Luke. Leeds United: Potts; Menzies, Milburn (J.); Edwards, Hornby, Copping; Duggan, Hydes, Keetley, Furness, Cochrane.
